Qatar Work Visa for Nepali Workers: Complete 2026 Process Guide

A Qatar work visa is not one application. It is a chain of four separate approvals across two countries, and a break anywhere in the chain sends the worker home from the airport rather than to the jobsite. This guide sets out every stage in order, the documents that decide each one, and the failures we see most often.

The corridor is active. Nepal’s Department of Foreign Employment extract of 22 October 2026 lists 184 open Qatar approvals carrying 2,051 workers of approved quota, filed by Qatari employers and processed through 339 licensed Nepali agencies. Those approvals are what the visa chain below ultimately delivers.

What Makes Qatar Different: The Qatar Visa Center

Most Gulf destinations put biometrics and medicals inside their own embassy process. Qatar moved them out to a separate facility, the Qatar Visa Center, which handles the applicant-facing steps in the worker’s home country before any visa is stamped. For Nepali workers this means the appointment happens in Kathmandu, not in Doha, and it means the sequence has a hard bottleneck that can be booked out.

The practical consequence is that QVC appointment availability, not embassy processing, is usually the pacing item. An employer who approves a demand assuming the worker flies in three weeks has not accounted for it.

The Six Stages, In Order

These stages cannot be reordered or run in parallel without creating a legal gap. Each one produces a document the next one requires.

  1. Demand attestation. The Qatari employer’s demand letter is authenticated by the Qatari chamber of commerce and then attested by Nepal’s mission in Qatar.
  2. DOFE approval in Nepal. The licensed agency registers the attested demand with the Department of Foreign Employment, which assigns a lot number and approves the quota.
  3. Ministry of Labour work permit approval in Qatar. The employer’s work permit application is approved against the registered company.
  4. QVC appointment and medical. The selected worker attends biometrics and the approved medical examination in Nepal.
  5. Visa stamping and labour permit. The visa is issued, and Nepal issues the worker’s labour permit before departure.
  6. Arrival, QID and contract registration. On arrival the worker completes the residence permit and the employment contract is registered in Qatar.

Stage Detail and Realistic Durations

Stages 1 and 2: Attestation and DOFE approval

Attestation runs about two weeks once a complete file reaches the mission, and the chamber authentication before it typically adds one to two more. DOFE registration after that is quick when the demand is clean. Together, budget four to six weeks before a Qatari work permit application is even in a position to start. The full document set and the rejection patterns are covered in our demand attestation guide.

Stage 3: Qatar Ministry of Labour approval (roughly days 1 to 10)

The employer files the work permit application against the company’s registered file. This step runs on the employer’s side and is where a first-time employer most often loses time, because the application is judged against the company’s own record: its commercial registration, its activity code and its historic compliance. A company that has never sponsored foreign workers discovers requirements it did not know applied to it.

Stage 4: QVC appointment and medical (roughly days 10 to 15, if a slot exists)

The worker attends the Qatar Visa Center in Kathmandu for biometrics and completes the medical examination at an approved centre. Two things sink this stage. The first is appointment availability, which is outside anyone’s control and is why a candidate should be registered for the QVC queue as early as the demand allows. The second is medical fitness: a worker who fails the medical examination cannot be substituted invisibly, and the employer has to replace them against the same quota position.

Stage 5: Visa stamping and Nepal labour permit (roughly days 15 to 22)

The visa is issued against the approved work permit. In parallel, and this is the step workers most often misunderstand, Nepal requires its own labour permit before the worker can lawfully depart. It is issued against the DOFE-approved demand, and it is what makes the worker a documented migrant worker rather than someone who simply boarded a plane.

Three days of pre-departure orientation and enrolment in Nepal’s foreign employment welfare insurance sit in this same window and are not optional. A worker who flies without the labour permit loses access to Nepal’s labour attaché support and to welfare fund benefits, which is exactly the protection they need if the job turns out to be different from the contract.

Stage 6: Arrival, QID and contract registration (roughly days 22 to 35)

On arrival the worker completes the residence permit process and receives the Qatar ID, commonly called the QID, which is the document that unlocks everything else: opening a bank account, obtaining a driving licence, and being visible in the Wage Protection System that records monthly salary transfers. The employment contract is registered with the Ministry of Labour, and registration is what makes the terms enforceable.

Employers should treat the QID as a deadline rather than a formality. A worker who is present but not yet registered is a compliance exposure, and salary paid before WPS enrolment may not be treated as compliant wage payment at all.

Documents That Decide the Application

From the employer

  • Commercial registration and trade licence, current, in the exact registered legal name
  • Attested demand letter stating positions, quota, salary and contract terms
  • Work permit application filed against the company file
  • Standard Qatar employment contract, in the Ministry of Labour’s required form
  • Evidence of accommodation arrangements and WPS enrolment

From the worker

  • Passport with sufficient validity, plus copies of every page used previously
  • Passport photographs to the specification the QVC appointment requires
  • Medical examination clearance from an approved centre
  • Trade or skill certificates where the position requires them, and the employer’s test result
  • Police clearance where the destination or employer asks for it
  • Signed employment contract matching the demand term for term

The single most common documentary defect is a name or date mismatch between the demand, the contract and the passport. It is not a legal problem, it is a clerical one, and it still costs weeks.

What the Visa Costs, and What the Worker Must Never Pay

Costs fall into four buckets: Qatar-side government fees for the work permit and residence permit, the QVC service fee and medical examination, Nepal-side DOFE labour permit and welfare insurance, and airfare. Which commercial party absorbs each is agreed between employer and agency, in writing, before the file moves.

What is not negotiable is that the worker pays neither the visa nor the air ticket. Qatar sits on Nepal’s free visa, free ticket list for Gulf destinations. Any agent, sub-agent or middleman who asks a candidate for a visa fee, a ticket fee or a “processing charge” is collecting money the law says is not owed, and that is the clearest early signal that the offer is not what it claims to be. The rules are set out in our free visa free ticket guide.

Why Applications Get Refused

Refusals are rarely mysterious. In our experience they cluster into six causes, and five of them are preventable before submission:

  • The employer’s file cannot support the sponsorship. Activity code, capital or compliance history does not match the number of workers requested.
  • Salary below the statutory floor. Qatar’s minimum package is QAR 1,800, comprising QAR 1,000 basic plus QAR 500 housing and QAR 300 food where those are not provided in kind.
  • Medical unfitness discovered at the approved centre, after the worker has already resigned from a job in Nepal.
  • Name, date or passport-number mismatches between the demand, the contract and the passport.
  • A demand that has expired or a quota already used, which surfaces only when the visa application is filed.
  • An unlicensed intermediary somewhere in the chain, which voids the whole process regardless of how good the documents are.

Checking the Offer Before You Commit

Three checks, none of which requires anyone’s permission:

  • The lot number. It should appear on the demand, the job advertisement and your contract. If the three do not agree, stop.
  • The licence. The Nepali agency must hold a Department of Foreign Employment licence. Ours is 1481/074/75, valid to 2027.
  • The salary against the destination floor. In Qatar that floor is QAR 1,800 as a package. A contract that cannot meet it will not be attested, so an offer promising less is not a real offer.

Which Qatar Roles Are Actually Open Right Now

A visa is only useful for a position that exists. Across the 184 open Qatar approvals in the October 2026 extract, this is where the demand sits by role group:

Role groupOpen approvals
Cleaner and housekeeping39
Construction trades25
Supervisor and foreman17
Driver10
Technician6
General labour6
Waiter and waitress4
Sales and retail4
Cook and kitchen3
Other roles69
Open Qatar approvals by role group, DOFE extract of 22 October 2026. 184 approvals carrying 2,051 workers of approved quota in total.

Two readings are worth having. Cleaning is the largest single category, which means it is the most competitive applicant pool and the least room for negotiation. Supervision is a much smaller pool with a QAR 2,500 median, so a candidate with a genuine supervisory record is applying into 17 vacancies rather than 39. The “other roles” block of 69 is the honest answer to most questions about specialised trades: Qatar is hiring them, just not in volumes large enough to name as a category.

The First Thirty Days in Qatar

The visa gets a worker to Doha. The first month decides whether the job is what the contract said, so treat it as an active period rather than a settling-in period.

  • Get the QID as early as the employer can arrange it. Everything else, including being visible to the Wage Protection System, depends on it.
  • Read the registered contract, not the one you signed in Nepal. They should match. If the salary or the role differs, raise it immediately rather than at month three, because a registered contract is much harder to change later.
  • Check your first payslip against the contract. Basic wage, housing and food treatment, and any overtime should be separately identifiable. If overtime is missing and you worked it, keep your own record of dates and hours.
  • Keep your passport. An employer holding a worker’s passport is not a normal arrangement and is not something the contract can require.
  • Know where to complain. Qatar’s Ministry of Labour operates a complaints channel, and Nepal’s labour attaché in Doha exists for exactly this. Using either is a right, not a confrontation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a Qatar work visa take for a Nepali worker?

Roughly six to ten weeks end to end, dominated by demand attestation on the front end. The four-stage visa chain itself, from Ministry of Labour approval to arrival, runs about five weeks when documents are ready and a QVC appointment is available.

What is the Qatar Visa Center and do I need to visit it?

The QVC handles biometrics and applicant processing in the worker’s home country. Nepali workers attend in Kathmandu before departure. Yes, you must attend in person, and the medical is completed at an approved centre in the same window.

Can I go to Qatar on a visit visa and find work?

No. Working in Qatar requires an employer-sponsored work permit and residence permit. A worker who enters on a visit visa and takes a job is working irregularly, has no enforceable contract, and cannot rely on Nepal’s labour attaché or welfare protections. It also makes a future legitimate visa harder.

What is a QID and why does it matter?

The Qatar ID is the residence permit card issued after arrival. It is required for a bank account, a driving licence, and enrolment in the Wage Protection System that records your salary payments. Without it your employment is not properly registered.

Who pays for the visa and air ticket?

The employer. Qatar is on Nepal’s free visa, free ticket list for Gulf destinations, so a worker pays neither. Anyone requesting money from a candidate for the visa or the ticket is acting outside the rules.

Can I change employers after arriving in Qatar?

Qatar changed its rules to allow job transfer under defined conditions after the notice period, without the previous employer’s no-objection certificate in many cases. The conditions depend on your contract length and completion status, so read your own contract and confirm with the Ministry of Labour rather than relying on general advice.

What if no QVC appointment is available for weeks?

The appointment cannot be expedited by paying an agent, and anyone who claims otherwise is inventing a shortcut. What you can do is register the candidate in the queue as soon as the demand is approved rather than after screening, and keep the employer informed so the start date is planned around the slot instead of being promised before it exists.

Do I need a police clearance certificate for Qatar?

It depends on the employer and the position, so ask before your file is submitted rather than afterwards. Obtaining one takes time in Nepal and a missing certificate at the appointment is the kind of gap that costs a full rebooking.

Method and Sources

Approval and quota figures are calculated from the Department of Foreign Employment job approval extract of 22 October 2026: 184 open Qatar approvals, 2,051 workers of approved quota, filed through 339 licensed Nepali recruiting agencies. Statutory amounts are from Qatar’s minimum wage provisions. Stage durations are indicative of the current process and are not a guarantee; every offer is confirmed in writing before a candidate signs anything. Mount Everest International Overseas Pvt. Ltd. holds Department of Foreign Employment licence 1481/074/75, valid to 2027.
